Design Architect

Safdie Architects is seeking experienced designers with exceptional creativity and communication skills to join their design practice.

Design Architects work directly with Moshe Safdie and the firm’s Principals to develop design concepts and architectural ideas and are responsible for organizing and coordinating the design efforts of all members of the design team across multiple projects concurrently. Given the diversity of the firm’s projects, with regards to project type, scale and geographic location, the Design Architect needs to be extremely nimble and be comfortable working within such diversity.

Candidates must be able to effectively supervise and lead teams of junior architects, have demonstrated experience developing and maintaining communication between architects and consultants and a strong knowledge of the design and detailing of complex projects. The position requires experience in the production of concept, schematic and design development documents for large scale, programmatically complex public and private projects. In addition to managing a team and being proficient with the tools of design, candidates need to be keen on being involved directly in the production of design studies, presentations and drawings.

Candidates must be highly motivated, have the ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment and possess a willingness to assume both project-wide and office-related responsibility. Aside from involvement on the architectural projects – designers will have the opportunity to work on research driven efforts and assist with publications and exhibitions.

Architectural Designer

Safdie Architects is seeking junior designers with exceptional creativity and communication skills to join the practice.

The position requires experience in the production of concept, schematic and design development documents for large scale, programmatically complex public and private projects. The architectural designer will be involved on a project from concept through completion, working directly with Moshe Safdie and the firm’s Design Principals to develop and execute the design.

In addition to an aptitude for design and problem solving, candidates must be highly motivated and have the ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment. Safdie Architects relies heavily on the building of physical models, the use of advanced digital design software and techniques, rapid-prototyping, etc. – candidates must have demonstrated skills in these areas.

BIM / Technology Manager

Safdie Architects is seeking an experienced and hands-on BIM / Technology Manager with excellent communication and organizational skills.

As a role designed to support the design teams, the BIM / Technology Manager works directly with all of the firm’s Project Managers to ensure the stable operation of all design and management software and coordinate across all of the firm’s ongoing projects.

He/she will ensure that SA is up to date on BIM standards and technology, provide the necessary training and support to staff and ensure best practice use of our Project Information Management system (Newforma). He/she will be expected to interact and coordinate with their peers with our consultants’ offices and act as the liaison between our in-house IT Manager and outsourced IT vendor for issues as they come up with regards to software and hardware.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Responsible for BIM standards development, implementation, and enforcement;
  • Coordination and management of BIM project data sets/workflows and project set up;
  • Development and configuration of BIM and PIMS software (with IT Manager);
  • Provide technical support for BIM enabling software applications to the project team; Provide or organize training for new hires and continuous training for current staff;
  • Assist project teams with modeling, detailing and multi-discipline coordination and collision checking;
  • Conduct research on new and emerging BIM technologies and standards or technologies/standards that can be leveraged through existing CAD investments;
  • Manage software products including but not limited to incorporating latest version releases and customization of the product;

Knowledge and experience requirements:

  • A minimum of five years’ experience working in the building design/construction environment;
  • Highly proficient in Revit, Rhino and AutoCAD;
  • Proficient in Office 365 products and services;
  • Working knowledge in Dynamo and Grasshopper;
  • Working knowledge of Newforma;
  • Knowledge of IT Hardware and Software network infrastructure;

Graphic Designer

Safdie Architects is seeking a graphic designer with exceptional visual and verbal communication skills to join the design practice.

As a role that spans the architectural and communications sides of the practice, the Graphic Designer will work directly with the firm’s Principals to develop print and digital materials for all aspects of the practice:

  • qualifications, proposals and other new business initiatives
  • social media
  • award submissions
  • short-run publications, look-books and other collateral 

Additionally, the Graphic Designer will have the opportunity to support the architectural team on design competitions and assist the external teams and designers working on exhibitions and publications of the firm’s work.

Knowledge and experience requirements:

  • Expert knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite;

Processing Archivist

Safdie Architects seeks a team-oriented, motivated, flexible, Processing Archivist to work in our Somerville, MA office. The position reports to the Archivist and focuses on processing the backlog of multimedia architectural project documentation. Working closely with the Archivist and other key stakeholders, the Processing Archivist helps provide access to 60 years of the firm’s visual history through digitization of unique materials and management of the office’s Digital Asset Management System.

The Processing Archivist assists with the management of a vast collection of unique archival materials in analog and digital formats, including, architectural drawings, Moshe Safdie’s original sketches, architectural models, photographs, artifacts and A/V. The Archives department collaborates with and supports other groups in the firm, such as, Marketing, Communications, and IT.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Process archival materials: appraise; rehouse materials as necessary; organize, arrange and describe; create inventories, and prepare for off-site storage.
  • Digitize and catalog collections, including, original artwork, photographs (slides, negatives, prints), and architectural models.
  • Manage Digital Asset Management System:  implement updates and design changes to the office’s Omeka site; upload images and metadata, and create exhibits.

Basic Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in archival studies, or, master’s degree in library science or history, with a concentration in archives management.
  • Two years’ processing and/or DAM experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of archival preservation practices.
  • Familiarity with descriptive standards, controlled vocabularies, and thesauri.
  • Knowledge of archival imaging standards and practices.
  • Experience with coding languages.
  • Ability to lift 40 lbs.

Additional Qualifications

  • Knowledge of and interest in architecture, art, and design preferred.
  • Ability to balance multiple tasks, requests, and projects in a time-sensitive environment.
  • Ability to handle analytical and highly detailed work.
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills.
