Operations Manager

Safdie Architects is looking for an experienced Operations Manager to support the firm’s Principals in the running of their international architectural practice. The position requires an individual adept at both practice management and project management, with excellent creativity and a proven capacity for excelling in highly collaborative environments.

Specific areas of focus for the Operations Manager include:

  • Monitoring prospective and existing projects to ensure sufficient talent capability mix
  • Working with Principals to determine proper allocation and staffing assignments
  • Monitoring and managing staff utilization and productivity
  • Developing and monitoring project work plans including milestones, workflow, staffing and project budgets (using Deltek’s Resource Planning Module)
  • Assisting Project Managers with project kick-off, phase-start internal team meetings and contract management throughout course of project, including the preparation of applications for additional services
  • Developing quality and production standards for projects and organizing periodic review of project documents and deliverables (to ensure consistency and sharing of knowledge)
  • Assisting Principals in developing preliminary project plans and assembling consultant teams for the pursuit of prospective projects
  • Coordinating the firm’s recruitment efforts, internships and research fellowship program
  • Collaborating with Human Resources and the firm’s Principals on performance reviews, staff development, and compensation and benefits practices

Requirements:

  • Professional Degree in Architecture or other design-related profession (Licensure preferred but not required)
  • 10+ years’ experience in a design practice, with sustained involvement in project management and/or practice management

Interior Designer

Safdie Architects is seeking an interior designer with excellent creativity, as well as strong communication and organizational skills to join their international design practice.

Safdie Architects is responsible for the interior design for many of the projects undertaken by the firm in order to ensure the overall design is holistically conceived and integrated. The interior design studio works hand in hand with Moshe Safdie, the firm’s principals, and the architectural teams to design interior spaces across all scales and all project types, from concept design through construction administration.

As a key member of the interiors studio, the interior designer will work to develop interior concepts and ensure the successful delivery of interior design scope within the firm’s projects. Main duties include:

  • Participate in  the development and advancement of interior design concepts through sketches, models, diagrams, massing studies, and other visual formats;
  • Design and documentation during all phases of a project from concept design through construction administration;
  • Liaise with architectural teams in order to meet project deadlines and reviews;
  • Participate in the research, selection, presentation, and documentation of materials and FF&E schedules;
  • Coordinate with external consultants, product representatives, furniture dealers, vendors, and fabricators;
  • Assist with the ongoing maintenance and development of the ID materials library

Candidates should have demonstrated experience in interior documentation, millwork detailing, and FF&E selection and specification.

Junior Interior Designer

Safdie Architects is seeking a junior interior designer with excellent communication and organizational skills, and the ability to multi-task within a fast-paced environment, to join their international design practice.

Safdie Architects conceives of the interior design for many of the projects undertaken by the firm in order to ensure the overall design is holistically integrated. The interior design studio works hand in hand with the architectural teams to design spaces across all scales and all project types, from concept design through construction administration.

As a key member of the studio, the junior interior designer will work directly with one or more designers to assist in the smooth running of the studio and the successful delivery of interior design scope within the firm’s projects. Main duties include:

  • Assist with the development of design concepts through sketches, models, diagrams, massing studies, and other visual formats
  • Provide design and documentation support during all phases of a project from concept design through construction administration
  • Work with external consultants, product representatives, furniture dealers, vendors, and fabricators
  • Liaise with architectural teams in order to meet deadlines and reviews

Architectural Archivist

Safdie Architects is seeking to add an in-house Architectural Archivist to their design studio in Somerville, MA. The Archivist will work directly with Moshe Safdie and the studio’s Principals to determine the significance of source material, oversee the transfer of materials to the Safdie Archive at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, and direct the internal asset and knowledge management activities of the studio.

Currently comprised of material from 235 projects, the Moshe Safdie Archive records the progression of Safdie's career from his first unpublished university papers to the firm’s current projects. The collection includes 140,000 drawings, over 200 architectural models, extensive project files, audio visual and digital material, 100,000 project photos and travel slides, 215 personal sketchbooks, and 2,250 large sketches.

Primary responsibilities:

  • manage the processing and preservation of original sketches and models
  • maintain archive of original and digitized visual materials and other digital assets, including video, film, publications, and articles
  • collaborate with McGill’s Canadian Architecture Collection on archival standards
  • organize, catalogue, and transfer materials to the Safdie Archive and other locations
  • collaborate with project leaders to develop best practices and procedures for in-house records management and tracking of active project-related materials
  • support communications, publications and exhibition initiatives as it relates to the retrieval and lending of archival materials


Preference given to candidates with:

  • Advanced degree in library science, architecture, art history and/or equivalent professional experience
  • Prior experience with an architectural practice and/or architectural archive
  •  Strong knowledge of archival standards and protocols, digital standards, and collections management
  • Experience using and managing Digital Asset Management programs

BIM / Technology Manager

Safdie Architects is seeking an experienced and hands-on BIM / Technology Manager with excellent communication and organizational skills.

In support of our design teams, the BIM Manager works directly with the firm’s Project Managers to ensure the stable operation of all BIM software and processes across all of the firm’s projects.

He/she will ensure that SA is up to date on BIM standards and technology, coordinate any necessary training and support to staff and ensure best practices are in place to implement BIM standards. He/she is expected to interact and coordinate with their peers at our consultants’ offices in the creation, execution and maintenance of BIM execution plans for all projects throughout their duration and act as the liaison between our in-house IT Manager and outsourced IT vendors with regards to BIM related hardware and software issues.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Responsible for BIM standards development, implementation, and enforcement;
  • Coordination and management of BIM project data sets/workflows and initial project set up.
  • Negotiation, implementation and maintenance of all BIM execution plans.
  • Development and configuration of BIM and PIMS software (with IT Manager);
  • Provide technical support for BIM enabling software applications to the project team; Provide or organize training for new hires and continuous training for current staff;
  • Research on new and emerging BIM technologies and standards.
  • Manage software products including but not limited to incorporating latest version releases and customization of the product;

Knowledge and experience requirements:

  • A minimum of five years’ experience working in the building design/construction environment;
  • Highly proficient in BIM and related software (primarily Revit)
  • Working knowledge in Dynamo and Grasshopper is a plus;
  • Knowledge of IT Hardware and Software network infrastructure is a plus;
