Albert Einstein Learning and Research Center

São Paulo, Brazil, 2021 / South America / Health & Education

Envisioned as an urban oasis, the educational and laboratory facilities are organized around a series of garden courtyards, featuring native Brazilian flora. The vaulting glass roof features an inventive shading system. Being within the atrium evokes the feeling of congregating in a garden under a leafy tree.

External and internal gardens are integrated with the architecture. The main activities of the building - auditorium, cafeteria, classrooms and labs - are focused around a series of stepped courtyards, the communal living rooms of the facility, which create opportunities for interaction, collaboration and discovery.

Located in an undulating site, adjacent to the hospital complex in Morumbi district of São Paulo, the building is organized into two connected wings. The east wing of the center is for teaching facilities, containing classroom spaces for medicine nursing, graduate programs, medical residency, and technical courses. The west wing houses the medical research facilities, including laboratories, clean room, and clinical research resources.

The central atrium features communal meeting places and an amphitheater for small lectures and performances. The atrium garden facilitates spontaneous interaction between students, faculty, researchers and visitors. It is the physical and symbolic centerpiece for all the activities of the facility.

Building section through the project: A vaulted glass roof structure is designed with an innovative shading and day-lighting system to adapt to São Paulo’s variable climate.

Continuous walkways bridge between the teaching and research wings, punctuated by a series of intimate meeting and study spaces on each level. The upper courtyard features an exhibition space and auditorium. The lower courtyard contains a restaurant overlooking the garden.
