With Intention to Build information page here
With Intention to Build is now on view at McCormick Gallery at Boston Architectural College from October 11th through January 2nd, 2023. An opening reception with Moshe Safdie will take place at the gallery from 5:30-7:00pm on October 27th.
Focusing on the most seminal of Moshe Safdie’s unbuilt projects, this exhibit curated by Safdie Architects, which opens to the public on October 11, takes viewers through the evolution of concepts and ideas developed over a 55-year practice.
With Intention to Build showcases materials used in the creative process, including models, drawings, and sketches, alongside various texts, photographs, and other artifacts that provide context and tell the stories behind these radical unrealized designs. Throughout, the exhibition demonstrates how integral these ideas have been to Safdie Architects’ evolving practice.
“As an architect committed to building and impacting the environment, I’ve always considered designs developed without intention of building to be incomplete statements. So much of reality, be it economics, the force of gravity, or construction feasibility can be ignored as to make such architectural productions less relevant.
But there is another category of unrealized designs. These are designs conceived with intention to build, resolving the varied forces that constrain and shape architecture, that then, because of external circumstances of one kind or another, remain on the drawing boards. These projects, numerous for every practicing architect, form a fascinating track through a thought process and a career. In the case of my own practice, some of the most significant works have been designed, detailed, and yet not built; significant in the sense that they embody ideas and concepts of great import.”
