The renovation will reveal original features of the library by removing previous building alterations and reconstructing original elements, including the conical roof and skylight. Excavation around the building will create a garden at the lower level, where a new two-story solarium will house the children’s room and teen room. Designed for LEED Gold certification, the renovation will improve energy efficiency and building performance while expanding areas for community use and educational programs.
Restored skylights and lightwells will bring daylight deeper into the building, reconnecting the library to the qualities of light and openness that defined its original design.
A new sidewalk-level entry, elevator, and reconfigured circulation will provide greater access throughout the historic building. New interventions will preserve the character and spatial organization of the historic building.
Excavating the site to the lower level will create a new relationship between inside and outside.
